Venerable Master Hsuan Hua:

If someone put me in a cage, wouldn’t I be uncomfortable?
Wouldn’t I wish that someone would let me go?...

If I were put in jail I wouldn’t want to live there.
Likewise, I don’t like to see birds put in cages.

This is because living beings and myself are of one substance.
Since I feel this, I want to liberate life.
