City of Ten Thousand Buddhas
The Master giving instruction in Chan Meditation
during a Winter Chan Session
Every year at the City a Chan Session was held. Sessions were several weeks long, running from 3:00 a.m. until 12:00 midnight with hour-long sits broken by twenty-minute walks. A one hour rest period was allowed in the late afternoon. Under the Master's patient guidance, his disciples gradually learned the beginning techniques of meditation. Everyone dropped his/her duties to participate fully in these rare sessions. Things came to a standstill in mid-winter as everyone investigated Chan together.
